Dog Guide to Kaikoura

This is Toby. He likes long walks on the beach and fine dining. We are sharing Toby's short guide to Kaikoura for those of you wanting to bring your pups on a roadie. To book a pet friendly room- head over to our pets page.

Walks

• The Pines to the Kowhai river: Just opposite Ocean Ridge there is a pine forest. This is very popular for dog walks as it provides a shady walk on a hot day and also backs onto the beach. We like to take Toby for a walk along the forest to the Kowhai river mouth where he takes a swim and then back to the car. (45 minutes -1 hour return)
• South Bay car park to the Pines: Alternatively, you can park at the first car park on the right as you enter South bay (directly opposite the racecourse) and walk along the track to the Pines. Just remember to bring a cap on the sunny days!  (40 minutes return)
• Town beach walking track: There is a track that runs from the town center across the bridge from the car park all the way up past whale watch and new world. This is a great walk to take the dog in the early mornings as you can watch the sun rise. 
• Town to the Pier: Lots of locals like to walk their dogs along the beach from town to the pier restaurant. The views are beautiful and you can have a beverage and some food at the local pub with some amazing views. Simply park in the main town car park and walk past the i-site till you reach the Pier (1.5 hours return or longer with lunch)

Remember to Leash the beast. It is important to keep your dog on a leash at all times on Kaikoura beaches due to the nesting dotterels which lay their eggs on the shore, especially in South bay. Often the locals will surround a nest with driftwood and sticks to mark them out but always keep an eye out just in case. Not only that but seals do tend to land occasionally! 

Unfortunately dogs are not permitted on the peninsula walk due to the seals and protected birds in the area. Dogs are only permitted up Mt Fyffe with a DOC permit.

Eateries

The general rule of thumb in Kaikoura is that if there's an outside eating area- dogs are often welcome. We know for sure that The Pier restaurant, Simes, Beach house and the groper garage are pet friendly. They often have a bowl outside so your pup can have a drink. Just remember to always have them on a lead.
